HYPOTHYROIDISM

Updated: Dec 12, 2022

Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid gland can be congenital (i.e. present since birth) or can occur at any later age. When it is present since birth, it can be due to absence of the gland since birth, a defect in formation of the gland or a defect in functioning.

When we encounter hypothyroidism later in life, it is mostly autoimmune. Autoimmune means it is caused by the immune system producing antibodies that get confused and attack the body’s own tissues.

Here, the thyroid cells are destroyed, stopping the thyroid’s ability to produce the necessary thyroid hormones.

While weight gain does occur in hypothyroidism it is rarely a cause of obesity in children, unless growth is slow as well.

Obesity itself causes mild abnormalities of the thyroid function tests; these changes are not the cause of obesity.

It is diagnosed by a blood test advised by your physician based on your symptoms.

Hypothyroidism is easily treated with levothyroxine replacement which comes in the form of a tablet and monitoring thyroid function tests.

Regular monitoring is the key for normal functioning of all the body functions.
